If you've ever read 'your horoscope' in a newspaper, you were reading your Sun sign — the sign the Sun was in when you were born. It's popular in Western astrology. Vedic astrology, however, gives the Moon the leading role, and predictions are usually based on your Moon sign (Rashi).
What each one represents
- Sun sign — your core identity, ego, vitality and sense of self.
- Moon sign (Rashi) — your mind, emotions, instincts and inner world.
- Ascendant (Lagna) — how you meet the world and how others first experience you.
Because so much of daily life is emotional and reactive, Vedic astrologers find the Moon a more accurate lens for how you actually feel and respond — and the entire Dasha (planetary period) system is calculated from the Moon's position at birth.
Why you might be 'two different signs'
It's completely normal to be, say, a Sun-sign Aries but a Moon-sign Scorpio. That's not a contradiction — it's depth. One describes the face you show; the other describes the tides underneath. Knowing both, plus your Ascendant, gives a far truer picture than any single sign can.
The only way to know your real Moon sign and Ascendant is to have your birth chart cast from your date, exact time and place of birth.
